Arizona – 5
The entry of the United States WWI made the economy of Arizona grow fast. Large areas of land began to be artificially irrigated. Until then, the practice of agriculture was restricted only to the higher altitude areas of Arizona, where the climate is more humid. Several dams were built, and several factories were inaugurated. Arizona was negatively affected by DepressionAlthough the negative effect it would have been stabilized through the construction of large public works, notably the hydroelectric Hoover, in Colorado River. A World War caused a new boom economic status. Several military bases were built, notably, airbases – Thanks to its sunny climate.
Between the end of 1910s until 1940 – Especially during the second war – thousands of people from other regions of the United States of America migrated toward Arizona, thanks to economic prosperity of the state. During the second war, the fear of air strikes by the Japan made hundreds of residents of coastal states of American West settled down in the region in search of greater protection.
During the late 1950The immense population growth caused the demand for water in the region soared. However, due to lack of rivers and lakes in the region, most of the water had previously been obtained in underground reservoirs of water. However, because of growing demand, the waters of the (few) rain the region were no longer enough to stabilize the levels of underground reserves. A new source of water was needed, and early 1960 Arizona decided to divert water from the Colorado River, through a plan called the Central Arizona Project. However, several dams were installed in the lower river in California. This sued in Arizona 1960And lost the case in 1963. In 1968The Central Arizona Project was completed.
In 1988, the english became official language of Arizona, through a state amendment, Article 28 of the state constitution. However, the Arizona Supreme Court found the amendment unconstitutional, which prohibited the performance at the official level of most of the provisions of the amendment by the state. Although considered unconstitutional by udiciário destadual, Article 28 remains in the constitution of Arizona to this day. Currently, a law similar to Article 28 (which will force shops and government use only English) is under consideration in the Legislature, and that if they get a vote through a referendum state, probably will replace Article 28. The law has generated controversy because of the large population Hispanic and Native American in the state.
In August 17 of 2005, The governors of Arizona and New Mexico jointly declared state of emergency in the counties of both states that are located along the border with Mexico. The implementation of this state, according to the governors, was made because of increasing violence, immigration, drug trafficking and the lack of action by both federal governments to solve these problems. The government of Arizona released a total of 1.5 million dollars in funding for these counties, and New Mexico has released 1.75 million dollars.
