On 29 December 1937, a new constitution, the Constitution of the Republic of Ireland (Irish: Bunreacht na hÉireann), Entered into force. It replaced Constitution of the Irish Free State and created a new state called simply “Éire”Or, in English,” Ireland. “The former Free State Government has taken steps to formally abolish the Office of Governor GeneralFew months before the new Constitution enters into force.[12]

Ireland remained in Commonwealth after independence until the declaration of a republic on 18 April 1949. Under the regime of the Commonwealth at the time, a declaration of a republic, automatically terminating a member state of the Commonwealth.
