Three years after the admission of Minnesota to the Union as the 32nd U.S. state, the Civil War would start in 1861With 11 states South AmericanWhich had split the country and formed the Confederate States of America. The Minnesota was the first U.S. state to offer troops to the Union for the fight against the Confederates.

In August of 1862, While the major battles and conflicts of the civil war took place relatively far from the state, the Sioux held a major attack against communities inhabited by Americans of European descent. In this attack, the Sioux killed more than 500 people and destroyed communities and plantations. Minnesota militias and U.S. troops eventually defeated the Sioux.

After the civil war, the Minnesota went through a period of great growth and economic prosperity. Large amounts of mills were built in the state to process the wheat grown in the region, factories were built in Minneapolis, and railroads began to connect Minnesota with the rest of the country. Moreover, the state government, along with the railway companies, was interested in attracting more people to the region. The government of Minnesota and railroad companies distributed large quantities of pamphlets in Europe – Especially in the newly united Germany and Scandinavia. Large amounts of European immigrants – mostly GermanAnd to a lesser extent, Norwegian, Swedish and Irish – Settled in the state, between the decades of 1870 and 1890.
