The hunchback-of-black-head measures approximately 36 cm long. The male has black head and beak blue with red vertical line on the basis of jaw. The female is larger, with brown plaumagem and a full white eyebrow.

As pre-nuptial ceremony, the male puffs up his neck. Parasite species, lays its eggs in the nests of other birds of their size or their own kind. The incubation period for eggs is 21 days.

Inhabits marshes without high vegetation. Occurs in northern Chile and Argentina to Paraguay and Bolivia. In Brazil, Is observed in Rio Grande do Sul and Paraná.
